Watching the U.S. Open just now and a Titleist commercial comes on. Various and sundry Titleist tour staff members looking seriously into the camera and expressing their profound love of Titleist golf balls.
Adam Scott intones, "Why would I play anything else?"
Camilo Villegas intones, "Why would I play anything else?"
And so on.
Well, I'll tell you why you'd play something else: Because some other golf ball manufacturer comes along and offers you more money to play something else. That's why.
Man do I hate the combination of pro golfers and equipment contracts. Or not the combination, really, since the combination is completely natural and understandable. Celebrity endorsements sell; and celebrities want money. So more like hating commercials with the player paid to use Brand A telling us that he's playing Brand A because Brand A is so good, not because Brand A's contract offer was so good.
This week Player X swears by Equipment Y, but next week he swears by Equipment Z. And those "What's in the Bag" features haven't meant diddly squat in decades.
Please, don't ever base an equipment purchase on what the pros are playing. It's just meaningless.
